Beautiful Buttons
Beautiful Buttons is the amazing story of an improbable journey. Today Cathrine Ann is the award-winning founder and CEO of Consumer Connections Inc.—a multi-million dollar company that specializes in customer service evaluation and analysis. Smart and sophisticated, she radiates confidence. But it wasn’t always that way. The story begins on the floor of a tenement apartment where six-year-old Cathrine sits staring up at her drunken father. “My million dollars” he calls her. But to his male friends and neighbourhood perverts, she is a sexual object to be exploited. Her mother seems too lost in her own bitterness to care much what happens to Cathrine. Things just seem to run downhill from there: poverty, a lonely adolescence, physical and social abuse, loser boyfriends, pregnant at fifteen, school dropout, single motherhood, jail at eighteen, welfare, sleeping on the streets or with strangers, a sex trade worker in her twenties, thoughts of suicide and an eventual mental breakdown. Then, a pendulum swing: an exciting new life that includes partying with celebrities, marriage to a socially prominent businessman, life in an exclusive upscale suburb—complete with lavish mansion and full-time maid—and a successful startup business. Like a fairy tale, the little girl who had nothing has it all. Too bad it couldn’t last. When her world implodes she finds herself back to having nothing, but determined to make something of her life—no matter what. Beautiful Buttons is a rough, raw, remarkably candid and often surprisingly funny portrait of a life lived and redeemed. Make no mistake, Cathrine was no saint. She is brutally honest about the mistakes she has made—the mistakes she continues to make. Her story will have readers alternately weeping, laughing and shaking their heads in admiration and astonishment. Beautiful Buttons is not about succeeding in business. It is a story about believing in yourself and your own abilities. $29.95 Hardback On Sale: 20100904 ISBN# 155470314X

The Johns
Following up on his scathing indictment of the international sexual enslavement of women in The Natashas, investigative journalist Victor Malarek lays bare the other side of the crisis—the men who fuel the demand. Each year more than 800,000 women and children are lured, tricked, or forced into prostitution to meet an apparently insatiable demand, joining an estimated 10 million women already ensnared in the $20-billion worldwide sex trade. To date, most research on the subject has focused on the various issues that propel these women into the trade, but little has been investigated, or written, about those who trigger the demand—the “johns.“ In this hard-hitting exposé, Malarek unmasks the kind of men—and organizations—that foster and drive the sex trade, from America to Europe, Brazil to Thailand, Phnom Penh to St. Petersburg and Costa Rica. The Johns is a chilling look into a dark corner of the world that these men have created at the expense of countless women and children. $21.95 Paperback On Sale: 20100905 ISBN# 1554702755

Sunray
I am sorry that the job that I do takes me away from you. I am sorrier still that sometimes I do stupid things and maybe put myself at risk. More, I wonder at the guys who follow my direction. I wonder about their families. I worry that I will hurt them, or cause my guys to be hurt…. Thank you for believing in me, my love…. I don’t think that I could do this without that. Especially when things are hard and the decisions are unpopular. Especially when it is scary. —May 7, 2006 A week after she wrote these words to her husband, twenty-six-year-old Captain Nichola Goddard became the sixteenth Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan. She also earned herself a spot in the history books: the first female Canadian soldier to die in combat. Goddard, say her friends and family, would have hated being singled out for her gender: she was as strong, as capable and as brave as any male in uniform. She was not just a soldier on equal footing with her fellow troops; she was a leader—a “sunray,“ in military parlance—in one of the most dangerous positions in the armed forces, a Forward Observation Officer with the artillery unit. In Sunray: The Death and Life of Captain Nichola Goddard, award-winning journalist Valerie Fortney examines how a woman raised by self-described “left-wing hippies” came to find herself fighting—and dying—in Afghanistan. Based on in-depth interviews with Goddard’s family, friends, and colleagues, as well as exclusive access to never-before-seen letters, Sunray tells the story of a remarkable 21st-century soldier. It is an intriguing, heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring look at the decision to serve, and at the costs. Reviews: “This important biography introduces the remarkable young woman who was a devoted soldier, wife, daughter and friend.... This book is required reading for anyone who questions the Canadian mission in Afghanistan, and not because it provides answers to that question.... Perhaps even more important, it is a fitting tribute to not only Goddard but also to Trooper Karine Blais, the second female Canadian soldier to die, and to the 150 Canadian men lost to the Afghan War as well.” - Winnipeg Free Press “On May 17, 2006, Nichola Goddard became the first Canadian woman to die in combat. She’s more than just a statistic, however, and Sunray meticulously pieces together her biography-from her gobe-trotting childhood to her tour in Afghanistan- resulting in a thoughtful portrait of a truly modern soldier.” - Chatelaine “The detail and research Fortney marshals renders the story universal, and reveals the difficult compromises that military life demands. This is not a book only for military enthusiasts or history buffs; it will reward any reader interested in the drama of a brave, inspiring life.” - Quill & Quire $32.95 Hardback On Sale: 20100907 ISBN# 155470300X

Superdad
Chris Shulgan seemed like an average young urban father: a house in Toronto’s hip Queen West neighbourhood, a loving marriage, afternoons at the park with his infant son. But this enviable life concealed a shocking secret: nights of hard drinking that would push him, inevitably, to the city’s underbelly, where he bought and smoked crack. At first Shulgan managed to justify his behaviour: the occasional drug binge allowed him to blow off steam, ultimately making him a better, more attentive father. Until the night he found himself poised to choose drugs over his child’s safety, and the carefully constructed façade began to crumble. Woven through Shulgan’s powerful, darkly funny account of his domestic days and restless nights is an exploration of his own misguided ideas of fatherhood. At the heart of Superdad, however, is the deeply personal story of a man finally throwing a light on the darkest corners of his life. Advance Praise for Superdad: “Infuriating, moving, and terrifying, Superdad is a journey into the dark heart of self-destructive hypermasculinty and out the other side into a kind of uneasy truce between the idea of ‘father’ and ‘real man.’ As a writer, I found myself awed by Shulgan’s tale-teller’s facility; as a dad, I found myself wanting to smack him until he stopped destroying his family and his life. Superdad is a brave memoir that humanizes the self-immolating urge of the crack addict.” —Cory Doctorow, author of For the Win and co-editor of Boing Boing “Christopher Shulgan pulls off a cool sort of alchemy; Superdad is an illuminating book about delusion, a wise book about idiocy, a kind-hearted book about acting like a jerk. And then on top of all that, the man makes writing look easy.” — Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall, author of Down to This and Ghosted $29.95 Hardback On Sale: 20100930 ISBN# 1554703018

Getting Back in the Game
Has Canada lost its place in the world? Are we destined for a future as middle power, denied a seat at the “grown-ups table”? Some would argue yes—that decades of neglect and inattention have rendered Canadian foreign policy ineffective at best, and non-existent at worst. Paul Heinbecker—career diplomat and former permanent ambassador to the UN—strongly disagrees. The golden days of Pearson may be long gone, he argues (and perhaps they weren’t quite as “golden” as we’d all like to remember), but Canada still has a role to play. In Getting Back in the Game, Heinbecker presents his compelling vision for the future of Canadian foreign policy—a future in which Canada can work both with the United States and apart from it; in which our government can take a stand and effect change on issues of the day, from climate change to the Middle East; in which this country has a key role to play in the rehabilitation of global governance. Drawing on more than thirty years of experience, Heinbecker offers a comprehensive, behind-the-scenes look at how we got to where we are, and how we can move forward. Through a wide range of topics—the institutions of foreign policy; the use of hard, soft and smart power; Canada’s complex relationship with the United States; and the continuing conundrum that is the United Nations, among others—Heinbecker explores the questions and concerns that are on the minds of Canada’s leaders, thinkers, and citizens. In the end, he makes a strong case for Canada’s future on the world stage. Like Mark Twain, he argues that “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.” Praise: “Getting Back in the Game crystallizes Paul Heinbecker’s impressive experience analysis at the active centre of Canadian foreign policy for more than thirty years. His book is informed, fluent, often blunt, and both realistic and optimistic about a Canada which can matter in the world, and a United Nations that is ‘innovative, effective and important.’” “Paul Heinbecker has served a variety of prime ministers and foreign ministers as a thoughtful and clear-spoken analyst of Canadian foreign policy. In this, a veritable ‘playbook’ in Canadian foreign policy past and present, he shares his insight with the Canadian public, and we will all benefit from his intelligent and provocative but always committed rendering of the active role that Canada can play in the world.” “This is an impressive and comprehensive review of Canada and its place in the world: past, present, and future. It is a highly readable and sensible Canadian foreign policy treatise well rooted in experience and wisdom.” “Paul Heinbecker makes a very persuasive case for an active, ambitious foreign policy for Canada. Getting Back in the Game should be required reading for all those who think Canada is too small to do anything worthwhile on the world stage.” $34.95 Hardback On Sale: 20101005 ISBN# 1554702984

Hockey Night in Canada?s Best of the Best
A few years ago, Scott Morrison and a panel of experts from CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada started a debate about the best players to wear each number, from 00 to 99. The result was fascinating and informative—and often contentious! Now, Morrison and the panel are back with a new debate sure to spark heated arguments in sports bars, dressing rooms, arenas, and even over kitchen tables: Who were the top 10 NHL players all-time at each position? Who were the top 10 coaches and general managers? Which were the greatest NHL teams ever? And who was the best of the best? In Hockey Night in Canada’s Best of the Best, Morrison offers an in-depth look at the best of the best, for both the pre- and post-expansion eras, in every category—players by position, coaches, general managers and teams. Morrison also treats his readers to interesting details about what made these men the best of the best, while Hockey Night in Canada’s experts offer their own insights. Featuring statistics, little-known facts, interesting anecdotes, and spectacular full-colour photography, this book is sure to be a favourite with hockey fans of all ages. $32.95 Hardback On Sale: 20101009 ISBN# 1554703166

The Swell Season
In the six tales that make up The Swell Season, Josef Skvorecky recounts the frustrated desires of young Danny Smiricky, a teenager growing up in the forties.
